Started Sewing: February 2013*

Method of Learning: Online – videos, blogs, websites, e-patterns, regular patterns, also, through friends and family. Just jumping in and trying it out if it looks like something that I would want to create. I don’t want to get too serious and lose the fun of trying and learning.
Lessons learned so far: I’ve noticed that one problem I keep having with this whole sewing process is cutting out the pattern pieces. I like to rush through this part because I want to get to the fun of sewing!
One mistake I’ve made is misunderstanding some of the directions listed in the pattern - cutting something out only to realize that it isn’t correct. I’m definitely a visual learner, so watching someone explain and execute something (even if it’s just color pictures not video) makes a world of difference. One thing I may need to do is place the pattern on the fabric and then walk away, come back later and then re-check how I’ve laid it out. Then ask myself, will I be able to cut out all the pieces the way I have it laid out? Or, walk through the process of cutting (without cutting) and see if it’s correct. Sometimes I can catch mistakes that way. Most of the time I just want to place the pattern, cut it out and get to sewing. I need to learn to enjoy the whole process of making something, not just sewing and SLOW DOWN. After all, it’s not fun (or possible) to sew something if it’s not cut right! LOL!
To anyone who reads this post. If you have experienced this issue, how have you gotten past it? For my experience seamstresses who may just be passing through, what are your suggestions or tips?
*Only other time I've sewed was in Home Ec in middle school (we don’t need to discuss how long ago that was.) :-)
